Il premio venne fondato nel 1981 dal giornalista John J. B. Wilson. I Golden Raspberry (Lamponi d'Oro) sono assegnati annualmente come riconoscimento ironico agli aspetti kitsch, ai lati eccessivi, presenti nei film. Un Oscar al contrario tra gioco e sberleffo.
